Essential oils have many properties which make them useful for baby care. Many essential oils are gentle and at the same time antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal. Some essential oils (like chamomile) contain natural substances which are soothing to the skin. Here is a list of five essential oils to consider when making baby care products.
Chamomile (Chamomilla matricara): Chamomile essential oil is gentle and naturally skin soothing. It makes a good addition to products for general skin care.
Lavender (Lavendula officinalis): Lavender essential oil is antiseptic and skin soothing.
It makes a gentle addition to diaper area care products.
Rose (Rosa damascena, Rosa centifolia): The essential oil of the rose is very gentle to the skin. It naturally soothing and antiseptic.
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis): This essential oil adds a delightful fragrance to soaps and cleansers for babies and young children. Avoid using it in products that will remain on the skin (lotions, powders, creams, oils, etc.)
Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia): This essential oil is a powerful, but gentle, antispetic and antifungal oil. Use in diaper area care products for babies over 1 year old.

Here are some simple recipes for baby care products you can make with essential oils and essential oil blends:
Combine 1/2 tsp. essential oil blend with 1 cup cornstarch or arrowroot powder and 1 tbsp. kaolin clay.
Heat 4 oz. of melt and pour soap in a double boiler. Remove from heat and add 1/2 tsp. of your favorite baby blend. Stir well and pour into a mold to let harden.
Add 1 tsp. essential oil blend to 8 fl. oz. grapeseed oil. Stir well. Use as needed.
